Saturday, August 18, O.D. Sherrill will be at the Sacred Arts Center to sign prints and visit with our guests. She is active in our community, reaching out to encourage and teach it’s children.
O. D. Sherrill was born in the Indian Nation of Oklahoma. She grew up in Texas and Colorado where she developed a deep love for the people of the southwest. At an early age she began sketching faces and her parents recognized a natural talent. At the age of twelve they gave her a set of oil paints. Being a self-taught artist she enjoys working in oils and pastels. And as a realist, she has developed her own sensitive style.
While in Southern Italy, O D. Sherrill won awards for her series on the American West and was offered a two year contract to teach oil classes near Brindisi. On her return to the states she lived in Colorado for a time and later retired in Arkansas, taking residence near Eureka Springs among the Ozark Mountains. Here she desires to create on canvas a slower more simple way of life. She includes life in the country where God is worshipped and where family is loved and honored.
As the season opened for 2007, the Sacred Arts Center was pleased to present two new pastels by O.D. Sherrill. One depicts the rich heritage passed down through the African American community of worship and praise to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ entitled “Praise”. The pastel focuses on a grandmother with her hands lifted as she praises the Lord Jesus Christ. The second pastel is simply entitled, “Mother’s Praying Hands.” It depicts the precious hands of her mother, folded in prayer. One of the greatest memories we can pass on to our children are those precious times of prayer as we teach them to trust in the Lord and to daily seek His face in prayer. The Scripture says, “Blessed is the Nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.” (Psalms 33:12) To be a nation whose God is the Lord begins in the early years of life, being taught to love God, to honor God and to walk in His ways.
It is a joy to exhibit the work of our local artists in the Sacred Arts Center. We set aside special evenings to invite the artists to meet with the guests in the museum and sign prints. O D. Sherrill will be signing prints and visiting with our guests on August 18 th,
5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Sacred Arts Center on the grounds of the Great Passion Play.
